About Poway Adult Day Health Care Center
Inspiration/History
In 1998 Kathryn Holt had a vision of a safe and supportive place that would help loving families in need of daytime care for their aging loved ones. The journey she set upon was prompted by her much-loved, maternal grandmother, Faye Needham. Faye spent her sunset years in the Holt family home when she needed nursing care.
Through personal experience she learned of an alternative to convalescent home care in the form of Adult Day Health Care.
When the Holt family moved to Scripps Ranch, Kathryn began searching for the perfect location to start an Adult Day Health Care Center. She found the City of Poway to be very receptive to the idea. The first location was on Poway Road across from the city library, which she designed to the state specifications for licensure. In 2002 the center opened with a complete staff and a few seniors licensed by California’s Department of Healthcare Services and the Department of Aging.
After five years at the Poway Road location, Kathryn began looking for another site—one in a quieter location in the PowayBusinessPark. The program was housed in an interim location at the PowaySeniorCenter while the permanent location at 12250 Crosthwaite Circle was found, purchased, and renovated. It became a whole family enterprise with the help of her brother, Bruce Knowlton, and her parents, Roger and Lois Knowlton.
While there have been many State budget crises that have threatened the actual existence of adult day health care programs, the program continues to flourish as it makes such a positive impact on the lives of older adults and their family caregivers.
